Little Burgundy’s Citizen’s Committee Sues The City of Montreal Over Hazardous Rental Housing

Little Burgundy’s Citizen’s Committee takes the City of Montreal to court over substandard housing for residents displaced by their latest urban renewal project.

OUR COMMITTEE:

  • Little Burgundy’s Citizen’s Committee was organized in 1967 in response to the City of Montreal’s urban renewal project

OUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Advocate for neighbourhood residents
  • Engage with municipal and provincial officials to ensure resident’s perspectives are heard
  • Dispute issues such as appropriate rent scales, and citizen participation

OUR VALUES:

  • Collaboration: We believe in the collective power of government and community, through authentic public engagement
  • Service and Commitment: We are committed to the liberty, and welfare of Little Burgundy residents
  • Accountability: We are accountable to Little Burgundy residents for our actions and decisions

OUR PROBLEM:

  • Little Burgundy Residents have been expropriated from their homes by the City of Montreal
  • The City of Montreal’s multi-year urban renewal will displace approximately fourteen thousand residents from Little Burgundy
  • The City secured unsafe housing for Little Burgundy residents
  • The housing complex has issued multiple by-law violations regarding the unsafe housing by Montreal’s property standards department
  • The City did not take corrective actions to improve the apartment complex or relocate residents
  • Residence from the district of Little Burgundy are desperate and have nowhere to go

OUR ACTION:

  • Little Burgundy’s Citizen’s Committee takes City of Montreal to court over substandard housing for displaced residents of urban renewal project
  • Little Burgundy’s Citizen’s Committee is seeking a one million dollar pay out
  • The money will cover displaced resident’s rental payments for the duration of their expropriation
